A Estrada de Ferro: crescimento economico e urbano num município brasileiro do Sul de Minas Gerais – Varginha, 1882-1920

Abstract

Entre o final do século XIX e o início do século XX, diferentes regioes do Brasil passaram por transformacoes sociais, urbanas e economicas. Tais transformacoes tiveram como motor, dentre outros, um importante servico, meio de transporte e de comunicacao: a estrada de ferro. As ferrovias chegaram nas mais diversas localidades, encurtando distancias, transportando pessoas e mercadorias. O objetivo central deste artigo é o de compreender a chegada da estrada de ferro num município do interior brasileiro: Varginha, situado no Sul do Estado de Minas Gerais. Com a utilizacao de fontes manuscritas, impressas e referencias bibliográficas, foi possível compreender que a passagem da estrada de ferro pelo município contribuiu com o crescimento urbano e economico varginhense.
