Las reservas internacionales en los últimos 25 anos y sus perspectivas

Abstract

“Las reservas internacionales son una herramienta y un indicador importante del manejo y desempeno económico. Su nivel básico es la "liquidez" necesaria de un país para atender sus pagos por importaciones, servicios y deuda. Mayores niveles de reservas con respecto al nivel básico pueden sostenerse generando un mayor ahorro. De no ser así, bajo un régimen de tasa de cambio fija, el mayor nivel de reservas se traduce en presiones inflacionarias. Si la tasa de cambio es flexible, se produce una apreciación de la moneda o un alza de las tasas de interés, o una mezcla de ambas, según la política monetaria en práctica. En contraste, un nivel de reservas inferior al básico, con tasa de cambio fija, precipita una crisis del sector externo y fuertes y súbitas devaluaciones. El grado de crisis depende en parte de la credibilidad que tenga la economía y de su disponibilidad de recursos en el mercado internacional.”
