La inflación en Panamá (2006-2012): Un estudio descriptivo y econométrico

Abstract

Este documento ofrece un modelo para el estudio de la inflación panamena para los últimos seis anos. Desagrega el índice de precios al consumidor y lo coteja con una medida construida de inflación raíz que excluye elementos volátiles. Los modelos econométricos sustentan que los elementos subyacentes a la inflación en Panamá son, en promedio, estables. También encuentran que la inflación en Panamá, al ser una pequena economía abierta dolarizada, es muy elástica a situaciones locales e internacionales. Cambios súbitos de precio en algunos insumos cotizados en mercados internacionales o locales (como alimentos) o choques en el déficit fiscal que recalientan la economía pueden ocasionar incrementos en los niveles de inflación, en especial la inflación raíz. En un contexto propicio, estos factores tienen la posibilidad de causar dinámicas inestables en la inflación local a corto y mediano plazo.
