Relación entre esperanza de vida e ingreso. Un análisis para América Latina y el Caribe

Abstract

Resumen: Este trabajo tiene como objetivo general determinar la incidencia de las condiciones de vida en la longevidad promedio para los países de América Latina y el Caribe para el período 1970-2005, con base en un modelo econométrico de datos de panel. Los resultados de las estimaciones indican que el nivel de ingreso ejerce un efecto positivo aunque decreciente sobre la esperanza de vida y que la educación básica de la población activa incide favorablemente sobre la longevidad promedio de sus habitantes. Estos resultados indican que los recursos destinados a la atención primaria de la salud deben ser complementados con mejoras en la infraestructura y hábitat sociales, a fin de generar un efecto perdurable sobre la esperanza de vida al nacer.
