Cointegración y causalidad entre las exportaciones y la producción en el Valle del Cauca (Colombia)

Abstract

Resumen: Este documento investiga la validez de la hipótesis del crecimiento económico basado en exportaciones (ELG) y la hipótesis de las exportaciones impulsadas por el crecimiento (GDE) para el Valle del Cauca. Empleamos datos anuales (1960-2015) y complementamos el análisis agregado más tradicional en la literatura con un análisis sectorial (1975-2015). Este documento hace dos aportes. Primero, se incluye un análisis para los sectores de producción de azúcar, confitería, detergentes y papel. Y, segundo, se emplea por primera vez en esta literatura la nueva técnica de causalidad parcial para determinar la validez de estas dos hipótesis. Los resultados muestran que ni a nivel agregado ni sectorial existe evidencia que soporte la hiptótesis ELG. Por el contrario, se encuentra evidencia en favor del GDE. Estos resultados tienen implicaciones profundas de política económica, pues las exportaciones no son el motor del crecimiento económico de este departamento.
