Fertilidad y Pobreza: ¿Colombia un país machista?

Abstract

Resumen: Este trabajo analiza el vínculo existente entre fertilidad y pobreza. Para esto se sigue la metodología propuesta por Dupta y Dubey (2003), quienes proponen utilizar el sexo del segundo hijo nacido en el hogar como un experimento natural aleatorio que puede explicar la relación entre fertilidad y pobreza. La hipótesis de este instrumento es que los hogares en los cuales el sexo del primer hijo es femenino tienden a tener una tasa de fertilidad más alta por lo que son más propensos a caer en situación de pobreza. Los resultados para Colombia utilizando la Encuesta de Calidad de Vida 2008 muestran que el sexo del primer hijo nacido en el hogar es un instrumento que puede explicar la relación entre fertilidad y pobreza en las zonas rurales, pero no en las zonas urbanas, en las cuales al parecer el sexo del primer hijo no tiene ninguna relación con la tasa de fertilidad.
