Abstract

Entrepreneurship is a key engine of economic growth, and entrepreneurial leadership (EL) is a crucial element of entrepreneurship. Yet, its investigation continues to be debated, and its assimilation into the greater leadership literature is limited. Although transformational leadership (TL) theory remains understudied and underappreciated, some suggest that EL is a different construct from existing leadership approaches. In addition, the relationship between TL and EL is ambiguous because TL is typically used to evaluate entrepreneurial leaders. Our research intends to contribute to the existing body of knowledge by elucidating the distinction and overlap between the two leadership philosophies and their gendered perspective. This article contributes to the nascent transformational, entrepreneurial leadership literature by reviewing the present body of knowledge addressing the interdisciplinarity of the emerging concept of entrepreneurial leadership.
