Abstract

The current agricultural scenario, in an ever more globalised context in which producer aid has seen continual cutbacks over recent years, marks new challenges for the agriculture sector. At the present point, agricultural co-operatives are becoming key elements in the sector’s development, as evidenced by their present substantial social and economic mass. Meanwhile, the new tendencies of Common Agricultural Policy, lending ever greater importance to concepts such as multifunctionality and rural development, make it necessary for co-operatives to become involved in these matters, as the opportunities presented are of enormous interest to them, as co-operatives can and should become the organisations leading these new concerns.
