Abstract

According to the recent results of the Ifo Investment Survey, western German manufacturers plan to invest ca. 9 percent more in plant and equipment in 2007 than in the previous year. For 2006 the responses of the survey participants registered an increase of nearly 8 percent. Of all the surveyed firms, 69 percent plan to invest more than last year while investment cuts were planned by only 25 percent. The remaining 6 percent expect investment spending to remain unchanged. In terms of investment motives, replacements were in first place at 30 percent, followed closely by the expansion motive, which is rapidly gaining ground. The rationalisation motive continues to lose importance.
