Abstract

From August 26 to September 4, 2002, the World Summit for Sustainable Development took place in Johannesburg. For Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, Federal Minister for Economic Co-operation and Development, important stimulus was given for sustainable development in the full sense of the term. Also for Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, MdB, the summit "was quite positive", despite extremely difficult circumstances. Prof. Dr. Edda Müller, Federal Consumers Association, and Jochen Flasbarth, German Conservation Alliance, give a more sober assessment: "instead of taking decisive steps towards a viable future world design, the negotiating parties were primarily concerned with preventing further setbacks. Far less than necessary was achieved."
