Ifo Business Survey in August 2002

Abstract

The business climate in German trade and industry worsened in August, mainly due to more sceptical business expectations. In West Germany the indicator declined for the third month in succession. This is, however, insufficient as a signal for a downturn since manufacturing, the true "cycle-maker" has now fallen for the second time. In east Germany the business climate worsened slightly. The somewhat better judgement of the current business situation was offset by the more pessimistic appraisals of the business outlook.
