Italy: From «Concertazione» back to «Conflittualitá»

Abstract

Following strong expansion in the first quarter, the Italian economy stagnated during the summer half of the year. In 2001 real gross domestic product grew by 1.8%. The unemployment rate declined to 9.5% on an annual average. Consumer prices were 2.3% higher than in 2000. In 2002 real gross domestic product will only rise by 1%. The unemployment rate is expected to average 9½%, consumer prices will increase by 2¼%. In 2003 GDP will grow by about 2½%, the unemployment rate will decline to 9% and the rate of inflation will amount to around 2%
