South Africa, Namibia, Simbabwe in 2001/2002: Stability and Chaos Side by Side

Abstract

At the end of June the Canadian village of Kananaskis in the Rocky Mountains hosted the G-8 Economic Summit of the leading industrialised countries and Russia. An entire day was devoted to NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa’s Development), a development initiative proposed by the African countries themselves. The prerequisites for making NEPAD more than a declaration of intent include primarily a democratisation of the continent and responsible governments obligated to the welfare of their country. Africa as whole is still far removed from this. The South of the continent may be taken as a mirror of the hopes, problems and needs of the entire continent: South Africa is the positive example of a country that has found the strength – despite a particularly heavy historical burden – to approach the solution of its problems with means in accordance with the rule of law and rational economic policies. Namibia, too, shows a positive picture – despite all of its problems -, whereas Simbabwe, once the model country, is today an example of the chaos on the continent.
