Shipping and Logistics: A Growing Market Despite Weak Economy

Author

Abstract

In 2001 the weak economy also dampened the demand for shipping services. The building sector in particular was a brake on demand. In addition, the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 caused serious setbacks. In all, transportation earnings and output dropped by 2.5% in 2001. Cross-border transport exceeded its year earlier level by a good 1%. Since the beginning of 2002 aggregate economic output has been recovering again, and the economic upswing will also help the demand for shipping, leading to expectations of another year of moderate sales growth of this industry.
