Building costs and construction work in an international comparison

Abstract

Many experts agree that construction costs and prices in Germany are very high in an international comparison. On the basis of EUROSTAT/OECD data, an Ifo study for the Federal Ministry of Transport, Construction and Housing concludes that the price level in housing construction in central Europe from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s did not vary so strongly from country to country. Exceptions were France and the UK, where residential units were built at about 25% and 30% cheaper prices, respectively, than in Germany.
