EDP service providers: cooling of the business climate, investment plans under scrutiny, only moderate growth in employment

Abstract

The results of the 25th business survey of EDP service providers conducted in April/May 2001 confirmed the doubts that first arose during the fourth quarter of 2000. The business climate cooled off further, reaching, at +42%, the lowest level since Summer 1996. Although firms still expressed satisfaction with the course of business during the first quarter of 2001, these assessments are nearly 25 percentage points below the peak of Summer 1999. The labour market situation for qualified EDP experts was reserved in the first months of 2001. Employment growth, which had already slowed in 2000, will only amount to about 1¼% this year.
