EDP Service Providers: Confidence Remains High, but Turnover Growth to Weaken Somewhat

Abstract

In January and February 2000, the Ifo Institute conducted its twentieth quarterly business survey of EDP service providers. A total of 428 questionnaires were evaluated for the final results, with 104 firms taking advantage of the new opportunity of answering the questionnaire on-line. The ending of the special boost to business from the conversion to the euro and the Y2K computer problem has had no effect on the business climate: the business situation in the last quarter of 1999 and the outlook for the next six months were assessed just as positively as for the survey in October/November 1999. Eastern German firms however, whose confidence has shown great fluctuations, were much less confident as last autumn. Businesses in eastern and western Germany expect turnover growth to slow. Particular interest focuses on the result of the question regarding "restrictions of business activity because of a lack of skilled workers": the apex was reached in autumn 1998 with 56% firms, on balance; now the share is fluctuating around the 50% level. Personnel bottlenecks are particularly prevalent in the area of highest turnover: Consulting and Project Services.
