The German position in the global competition for the development of new information and communication technologies

Abstract

In its structural analysis for the German government, the Ifo Institute carried out a comparison of international patent applications in IC technologies in the Triad (U.S., Japan, Europe) from 1987 to 1996. The greatest surge of IC patent applications was in the U.S.; activity in Germany was not even half this pace and was even slower than the EU average. However, the number of technologically active firms in Germany rose, which may be an indication of a revival of innovation competition. Another positive signal is that in the area of so-called critical IC technologies, i.e. areas with great future potential, German inventors have been able to keep pace with the international competition. In the ranking of the twelve most successful patent applicant submitters - measuring by the number of inventions for which international applications have been made - there is only one German firm (Siemens), but it has moved from place 11 (1987-1991) to place 6 (1992-1996); in the so-called critical technologies, Siemens is ranked fifth.
