Währungsturbulenzen in Südostasien

Abstract

Südostasien, bis vor einem halben Jahr die Wachstumsregion par excellence, ist "ins Gerede" gekommen. Trotz der Abwertungen, Börsen-Crashs, Banken- und Unternehmenszusammenbrüchen sichtbar gewordenen Schwächen des Finanzsektors und der 1997 und 1998 zu erwartenden Wachstumsverluste darf aber nicht außer acht gelassen werden, daß die realwirtschaftlichen Voraussetzungen in Südostasien nach wie vor besser sind als in anderen Entwicklungsregionen. Hohe Spar- und Investitionsquoten, relativ gut ausgebildete Arbeitskräfte, die Bereitschaft der Bevölkerung zum Verzicht und zu harter Arbeit und das kaufmännische Talent der Überseechinesen lassen erwarten, daß die Region mittelfristig auf einen steileren Wachstumspfad - jährlicher BIP-Anstieg zwischen 5% und 10% - zurückfindet.
