Starke Polarisierungstendenzen im Einzelhandel der neuen Länder

Abstract

Der Artikel thematisiert die rasanten Entwicklungen im ostdeutschen Einzelhandel in Hinblick auf die starken Polarisierungstendenzen zu einerseits großflächigen Distributionsformen und andererseits kleinen Läden. Nachdem der Transformationsprozeß im Handel in eine ruhigere Phase überging, wobei sich die Expansion der Verkaufsfläche von 1989 bis 1997 verdreifacht hatte, fehlen aber in Ostdeutschland die mittelgroßen inhabergeführten Geschäfte. Generell weist die Einzelhandelslandschaft eine starke Discountorientierung auf. Außerdem werden die vorhandenen Probleme der kleinen Unternehmen durch ein preis- und autoorientiertes Verbraucherverhalten verstärkt. Nach der zum großen Teil abgeschlossenen Expansionsphase ist mit einer Intensivierung des Wettbewerbs zu rechnen.
