Die Internationalisierung des Yen - Aufstieg zur Leitwährung?

Abstract

Der Yen konnte sich bisher nicht als international verwendete Währung durchsetzen. Seit 1993 ist sogar der Anteil der in Yen fakturierten Ausfuhren an den Gesamtexporten Japans zurückgegangen, nachdem er seit den achtziger Jahren kontinuierlich gestiegen war. Auch der Außenwert der Währung der ostasiatischen Schwellenländer orientiert sich noch überwiegend am US-Dollar. Der Yen gewinnt dort zwar an Bedeutung, von einer Leitwährungsfunktion kann allerdings noch nicht gesprochen werden. Die Fluktuationen des Yen-Dollar-Kurses im vergangenen Jahr haben die Debatte um eine stärkere Internationalisierung des Yen wieder aufleben lassen. Wenn auch eine Währungsunion nach europäischem Muster in Ostasien utopisch sein dürfte, so könnte doch eine engere Währungskooperatin bis hin zu einem Festkurssystem (Yen-Block) ökonomisch sinnvoll sein. In dem Beitrag wird u. a. untersucht, welche Vor- und Nachteile ein Yen-Block einerseits für Japan und andererseits für die ostasiatischen Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländer hätte.
