Abstract

In dem knappen Vierteljahrhundert von 1970 bis 1993 hat die Weltbevölkerung um fast 2 Mrd. auf 5,5 Mrd. Menschen zugenommen. Gleichzeitig hat sich zwar die Weltwirtschaftsleistung (in laufenden US-Dollar) um mehr als das Siebenfache erhöht. Der Differenzierungsprozeß zwischen den Reichen und den wirklich Armen hat sich jedoch weiter verstärkt. Die Industrieländer, deren Pro-Kopf-Einkommen sich auch recht unterschiedlich entwickelt hat, haben nach wie vor einen Anteil von über 80 % am Welt-BIP, Afrika ist das Armenhaus der Welt geblieben, und wenn Südasien sein Bevölkerungswachstum nicht bald in den Griff bekommt, sieht es für diese Region kaum besser aus.
