EU-Erweiterung 1995 : Gewinn für alle ; neue Mitglieder gut vorbereitet

Abstract

Am 1. Januar 1995 fand zum vierten Mal eine Erweiterung der Europäischen Union (EU) statt. Finnland, Schweden und Österreich traten bei. Dieser vergrößerte Wirtschaftsraum erfaßt mit gut 380 Mill. Menschen etwa 96% aller Westeuropäer. Sie erarbeiten rund 95% der westeuropäischen Wirtschaftsleistung. Das Bruttoinlandsprodukt der EU dürfte 1994 zu laufenden Preisen und Wechselkursen etwa der zusammengefaßten Wirtschaftsleistung Kanadas und der USA entsprochen haben. Bisher hat jeder Schritt zur engeren Integration Westeuropas den beteiligten Ländern per saldo größeren ökonomischen Gewinn gebracht, als es im Alleingang möglich gewesen wäre. Auch die Erweiterung der EU wird allen Beteiligten nicht nur kurz-, sondern auch mittel- und langfristig Nutzen bringen. Dagegen sind Norwegen und die Schweiz integrationspolitisch zunehmend in die Isolation geraten.
