Nouveaux emplois ouvriers, nouveaux territoires ouvriers ?. Une comparaison des géographies professionnelles et résidentielles des ouvriers de l’industrie et des ouvriers de la logistique en Île-de-France

Abstract

In today’s post-industrial metropolises, the logistics industry (warehousing, goods transportation, and deliveries) now gathers more blue-collars than the manufacturing industry. Against this background, the paper aims to explore the spatial consequences of this major sectorial shift within working classes, in the case of Great Paris and through a cartographical analysis. Workplaces and residential places (at the municipal scale) of logistics blue-collars and manufacturing blue-collars are thus compared. This analysis is based on data from the French Population Census (2012-2013). The paper demonstrates that the development of logistics blue-collar jobs and their localization in outer-surburban logistics zones entail a disconnection between workplaces and places of residence. However, working-class municipalities in the historical industrial belt remain the places where both jobs and housing of current blue-collar workers are most concentrated, whether they work in logistics or in manufacturing.
