Abstract

The Covid-19 health crisis enriches our understanding of the business models of patent trolls. Through a detailed analysis of the strategy of the firm FIG (which has been revealed thanks to the Covid-19 crisis), our research highlights a new generation of patent trolls which is based on a contaminant business model. Indeed, these trolls are no longer simply use extortion, but are acting through entities that they finance and incite to become trolls themselves. In this way, trolling strategies are transmitted in a viral manner. This crisis therefore helps us to unmask trolls, who often move forward in secret, and reveals that they can act and respond in a totally unexpected way.
