Le choix de localisation des immigrés en France : le rôle du logement social et des réseaux ethniques

Abstract

This paper investigates the location choice across urban areas of new immigrants arrived between 1975 and 1990 in France. We investigate whether ethnic networks and public housing interact in the location choice of immigrants. By providing information on public housing in a given location, ethnic networks can increase the attractiveness of public housing and influence the location choice of immigrants from the same ethnic group. We test that hypothesis by estimating the impact of the variations of public housing participation across ethnic groups and urban areas on the probability of choosing a location for a new immigrant. We find that, for non-Europeans, new immigrants living as a couple with children are attracted by urban areas in which their group is overrepresented in public housing. This result suggests that public housing and ethnic networks interact and influence the location choice.
