Abstract

We address the role of innovation networks on innovation in Canadian regions. In order to identify networks of cooperation, we analyse labor market areas for the period 1997 ? 2005, using patent applications filed jointly by several inventors. We show that the role of centrality and external collaboration differs between regions that are close to metropolitan areas and those in the periphery: whereas the intensity of external network connections has no bearing on innovation amongst regions close to metropolitan areas, external networking is a key explanatory factor for understanding the innovativeness of peripheral regions. For central regions it tends to be factors internal to the region that are associated with innovation. Moreover, we show that the effects of network position and external collaborations on regional innovation differ to some extent according to type of innovation.
