Abstract

The paper proposes a theoretical analysis of the effects of financial incentives associated with the achievement of health related objectives. Specifically, we focus on the effects on individuals? behavior during and after the incentive programs. Our model indicates that these programs are successful when wealth does not increase the marginal utility of the quality of life. In the opposite case, i.e. when wealth and quality of life are complements, we show that such financial incentives may reduce the propensity to adopt healthy behavior after the end of the programs.
