Abstract

From the notification of the Allied conditions on 7 May 1919 to their acceptance in extremis on 28 June, the German authorities were first indignant, torn, hesitant, and then resigned, as they dismissed the romantic dream of resistance in the districts of the East, the breeding ground and refuge of German nationalism and its militaristic tradition. This article copes with the stillborn project of an Oststaat ? an independent state of the Eastern Marches that would have evaded Allied constraints. Formulated by local politicians in December 1918, this project received support from the Prussian War Minister Walther Reinhardt and several prestigious generals. It crystallized the temptation of resistance during the dramatic weeks of June. Overwhelmed by what was at stake, the politicians turned to the military. As in November 1918, the Quartermaster General, Wilhelm Groener, had to bear the responsibility ? and the opprobrium ? for an inevitable decision that was to sound the death knell of the Oststaat project. JEL codes: N43, N94.
