Abstract

?This paper proposes a study of the innovation practices of French plastics firms by combining the evolutionary approach of the firm and the contributions of the literature on barriers to innovation. In accordance with this theoretical framework and based on twenty-four in-depth interviews, we propose a new typology of the innovation strategies of French plastics firms. We show that the majority of these firms tend to activate their dynamic capabilities to adopt strategies to become increasingly independent and to survive in an uncertain environment characterized mainly by an asymmetrical position with prime contractors and strong international competition. It is thanks to the specific skills and the intensity of innovation that plastics firms can find room for maneuver. At the same time, the implementation of innovation strategies leads to the emergence of barriers to innovation. ? ?JEL classification:? ? ? ?L21, L24, L52, L69, O32, O33.?
