Abstract

We compare the resistance of cooperative and non-cooperative banks from 2005 to 2014 based on Z-score analysis for 113 European banks. Our study shows that cooperative banks are more robust during crisis episodes (2008-2009 and 2011-2012). Systemic banks are less robust over this period, including during crises. However, despite lower capacities of resistance, systemic cooperative banks are significantly more robust than systemic non-cooperative banks. In contrast, non-systemic cooperative banks are not significantly more robust than non-systemic non-cooperative banks. Classification JEL : G01, G21, P13.
