Abstract

Before the era of the rail the majority ?industrial? transport is carried out by the means of the water way and in particular of the channels. These navigable artificial waterways are the fruit of a French technical long tradition. The basin stéphano-ripagérien does not escape this logic, the projects incipient within this industrial space for the majority are influenced by this technical culture. How a space such as this one, cradle of the French rail, did adopt an English innovation which completely calls into question the French technical culture? The beginning of the 19th century marks, in France, the beginning of industrialisation and thus of the English technical influence on the continent. In spite of this irrefutable fact one will need all the perseverance and the competence of the mining engineers to conclude this technology transfer. JEL: N73, O31
