Abstract

Studies of redistribution are generally conducted from the standpoint of the household, ie, the set of individuals sharing the same dwelling. This unit of analysis is not perhaps the most appropriate for studying redistribution in favour of young adults and their families. We propose an alternative approach which enlarges the family circle, usually restricted to the household. The aim is to better evaluate the financial burden on parents of young adults who no longer live at home and to aggregate all the transfers from which they benefit. Using this approach, we analyse assistance to young adults and their families and compare the results with those that a conventional, household-based study would produce.
