Abstract

The purpose of the present article is to discuss theoretical and conceptual approaches to the institutionalization of sustainable strategies for poverty-alleviation in tourism-development contexts. Facing the long-term-challenge of constantly eroding comparative advantages for tourism-destinations in developing-countries, there is an immediate need to identify new models of destination governance and management as well as possible conditions and factors for success in implementation. This article focuses on the approach by Schuhbert (2013, p. 539 et seq.), which is based on the idea of a fusion of the “social enterprises”-concept and the traditional “destination-management-organization” (so-called “social-DMOs”).
