Abstract

Sustainable development is one of the major challenges of contemporary management, imposing a balanced integration of economic, social and environmental dimensions in decision-making processes. In this context, mathematical modelling and simulation assert themselves as essential strategic tools for the analysis, evaluation and optimisation of the complex systems associated with sustainable development. This article aims to highlight the role and relevance of the mathematical models in supporting the management of sustainable development by analysing their capacities to anticipate evolutions, evaluate alternative scenarios and to fundament informed decisions regarding soil pollution management. Here are presented concepts and methods of mathematical modelling used in the simulations of ecological processes regarding the soil pollution as well as the advantages of using them in the identification of optimal strategies of development. The results obtained demonstrates that the mathematical modelling and simulation contributes significantly to reduce uncertainty, enhancing decisional efficiency and promoting long-term sustainable policies. Thus, the integration of these tools in the management of sustainable development regarding the management of soil pollution represents a necessary strategic direction in achieving the sustainable development goals in a dynamic and complex environment. The article generalizes mathematical models from the books of the author G.F. Pinder (Pinder and Gray, 2008, Pinder and Celia, 2006), making their simulations in Wolfram Mathematica software.
