Abstract

ABSTRACT The paper begins by outlining a simple locution model for office‐based activities defined to include both separate business‐service establishments and manufacturing headquarters. The latter are producers of business services that are then traded via intratirm channels. The model stresses human resource inputs and communications costs. The paper then analyzes survey data on intratirm trade in business services from which inferences result concerning the relative value fit human‐resource inputs and communications costs for various business services. This in turn leads to a distinction between services that locale together in office clusters and those that locale separately.
