Generalized Gini polarization indices for an ordinal dimension of human well-being

Abstract

type="main" xml:lang="en"> This paper suggests a family of generalized Gini indices of polarization that can be applied to dimensions of human well-being with ordinal significance such as self-assessed health data and literacy. We investigate several properties of this general index and characterize it axiomatically. We also look at a quasi-ordering induced by the generalized Gini indices for ranking alternative distributions of an ordinally measurable dimension. Implications of some of the axioms are also investigated.
