Reducing Food Loss: Post‐harvest Strategies at the Small Scale

Abstract

This article examines post‐harvest technologies and practices tailored to small‐scale operations, highlighting their potential to reduce food loss. A comprehensive approach to conceptualising post‐harvest technologies is proposed across various stages of the value chain. By categorising solutions into three clusters – traditional practices, technology‐driven approaches, and collaborative, community‐centred strategies – the article provides practical examples. The specific characteristics of short food supply chains are considered throughout, recognising both the opportunities and challenges these systems present for small‐scale producers. While many post‐harvest technologies are designed for larger market actors, smaller producers often rely on alternative strategies, drawing on direct relationships with consumers to achieve greater flexibility and sustainability. Balancing cost‐efficiency with sustainability requires prioritising traditional and community‐driven practices, despite the time and collaboration these approaches may demand to succeed. However, these efforts can yield additional benefits, fostering knowledge‐sharing, strengthening community ties, and ultimately contributing to more resilient and efficient food systems. Policy recommendations are also presented including tailored training programmes, regulatory adaptations, and the promotion of digital platforms to improve market access and reduce administrative burdens. Overall, the article demonstrates how targeted post‐harvest strategies can help small‐scale producers reduce food loss, contributing to broader sustainability, economic resilience, and food security goals across Europe. Cet article examine les technologies et pratiques après récolte adaptées aux petites exploitations agricoles, en soulignant leur potentiel pour réduire les pertes alimentaires. Une approche globale de conceptualisation des technologies après récolte est proposée à différentes étapes de la chaîne de valeur. En classant les solutions en trois groupes – pratiques traditionnelles, approches axées sur la technologie et stratégies collaboratives centrées sur la communauté – l'article fournit des exemples pratiques. Les caractéristiques spécifiques des chaînes d'approvisionnement alimentaire courtes sont prises en compte tout au long de l'article, en reconnaissant à la fois les opportunités et les défis que ces systèmes présentent pour les petits producteurs. Alors que de nombreuses technologies après récolte sont conçues pour les grands acteurs du marché, les petits producteurs font souvent appel à des stratégies alternatives, en s'appuyant sur des relations directes avec les consommateurs pour obtenir une plus grande flexibilité et une plus grande durabilité. L’équilibre entre rentabilité et durabilité nécessite de donner la priorité aux pratiques traditionnelles et communautaires, malgré le temps et la collaboration que ces approches peuvent exiger pour réussir. Cependant, ces efforts peuvent apporter des avantages supplémentaires en favorisant le partage des connaissances, en renforçant les liens communautaires et en contribuant finalement à des systèmes alimentaires plus résilients et plus efficaces. Des recommandations pour les politiques sont également présentées, notamment des programmes de formation sur mesure, des adaptations réglementaires et la promotion de plateformes numériques pour améliorer l'accès au marché et réduire les charges administratives. Dans l'ensemble, l'article démontre comment des stratégies après récolte ciblées peuvent aider les petits producteurs à réduire les pertes alimentaires, contribuant ainsi à des objectifs plus larges de durabilité, de résilience économique et de sécurité alimentaire à travers l'Europe. In diesem Artikel werden Nacherntetechnologien und ‐praktiken untersucht, die auf kleine Betriebe zugeschnitten sind, und ihr Potenzial zur Verringerung von Lebensmittelverlusten hervorgehoben. Es wird ein umfassender Ansatz zur Konzeptualisierung von Nacherntetechnologien für verschiedene Stufen der Wertschöpfungskette vorgeschlagen. Durch die Kategorisierung von Lösungen in drei Gruppen ‐ traditionelle Praktiken, technologieorientierte Ansätze und gemeinschaftliche Strategien ‐ liefert der Artikel praktische Beispiele. Die besonderen Merkmale kurzer Lebensmittelversorgungsketten werden durchgehend berücksichtigt, wobei sowohl die Chancen als auch die Herausforderungen, die diese Systeme für kleinere Produzenten darstellen, berücksichtigt werden. Während viele Nacherntetechnologien für größere Marktteilnehmende konzipiert sind, setzen kleinere Betriebe oft auf alternative Strategien, die sich auf direkte Beziehungen zu den Verbrauchenden stützen, um mehr Flexibilität und Nachhaltigkeit zu erreichen. Um ein Gleichgewicht zwischen Kosteneffizienz und Nachhaltigkeit zu erreichen, müssen traditionelle und von der Gemeinschaft getragene Praktiken bevorzugt werden, auch wenn diese Ansätze Zeit und Zusammenarbeit erfordern, um erfolgreich zu sein. Diese Bemühungen können jedoch zusätzliche Vorteile mit sich bringen, indem sie den Wissensaustausch fördern, die Beziehungen zwischen den Gemeinschaften stärken und letztlich zu widerstandsfähigeren und effizienteren Lebensmittelsystemen beitragen. Es werden außerdem politische Empfehlungen vorgestellt, darunter speziell zugeschnittene Schulungsprogramme, Anpassungen der Rechtsvorschriften und die Förderung digitaler Plattformen zur Verbesserung des Marktzugangs und zur Verringerung des Verwaltungsaufwands. Insgesamt zeigt der Artikel, wie gezielte Nachernte‐Strategien kleinen Erzeugerbetrieben dabei helfen können, Lebensmittelverluste zu verringern, und so zu den allgemeinen Zielen der Nachhaltigkeit, wirtschaftlichen Widerstandsfähigkeit und Ernährungssicherheit in ganz Europa beitragen.
