Abstract

Since China opened up to the world in 1979, it has tried hard to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) to develop an export‐oriented economy. This study assesses the investment climate in China during the period 1979–1990 and analyses the characteristics of joint ventures, which have been the predominant form of FDI in China.
