Abstract

Purpose: The present article studies the influence of the feeling of parental competence on the risk of burnout in parents of deviant students. Indeed, the feeling of parental competence, considered as a parent's perception of his or her ability to care for his or her child, involves two dimensions: the feeling of efficacy and the feeling of parental satisfaction. Thus, this study examines the influence of parents' sense of efficacy and sense of parental satisfaction on the risk of burnout among parents of deviant pupils in the city of Douala, Cameroon. Methodology: the survey was conducted among 40 (forty) parents of deviant pupils in the city of Douala, obtained using convenience sampling. The feeling of parental competence was explored using a self-evaluation questionnaire and a semi-structured interview guide, and the risk of burnout was explored using the “Parent Burnout Inventory”. This study integrates both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Findings: The results indicate that 60% of the respondents have an established parental burnout, 10% have a high and moderate risk, 12.5% have a slight risk and 7.5% have no burnout. A low sense of parental efficacy induced an increase in parental burnout, with a correlation coefficient of -0.073; Sig=0.042. Parents with a low sense of satisfaction feel burnt out, with a correlation coefficient of -0.352; Sig=0.026. Thus, as the sense of parental competence decreases, the risk of burnout increases. Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: this research suggests that the parental role should be taken into account in the fight against deviance in schools. In order to reduce the risk of burnout among school parents, guidance counsellors and psychologists alike would benefit from integrating support and monitoring for parents to prevent any risk of burnout.
