Un índice del coste de la vida en las ciudades españolas

Abstract

El bienestar de los ciudadanos depende tanto de sus niveles de renta como del coste de la vida que han de afrontar en función de su lugar de residencia. Sin embargo, la información disponible sobre las diferencias en niveles de precios entre áreas geográficas de un mismo país es muy escasa. Este artículo presenta un índice de precios para las áreas urbanas españolas que cubre el período 2004-2020. A modo de ejemplo, de acuerdo con dicho índice, el coste de la vida en las dos ciudades más grandes (Madrid y Barcelona) era en 2020 casi un 20 % mayor que la media del resto de las áreas urbanas de España. De este modo, si bien los salarios promedio del sector privado en Madrid y en Barcelona eran un 45 % superiores a los del resto de las ciudades, dicha diferencia se reduce hasta el 21 % una vez que se ajustan los salarios por su poder de compra.
