Argentina: los retos económicos frente a un entorno internacional adverso

Abstract

La economía de Argentina se encuentra en una complicada fase de transición. Con el fin de corregir los importantes desequilibrios acumulados en la década anterior en el terreno fiscal y en el de la inflación, el nuevo Gobierno que accedió al cargo en diciembre de 2015 optó por llevar a cabo un ajuste fiscal gradual, apoyado en un contexto de abundante liquidez internacional. En paralelo, el banco central asumió unos objetivos ambiciosos de reducción de la inflación. Sin embargo, en 2018, la falta de progreso en el frente de la inflación, el endurecimiento de las condiciones financieras internacionales y una fuerte sequía pusieron a Argentina en el foco de los mercados y le impidieron seguir financiando ese proceso de ajuste gradual, por lo que el Gobierno decidió solicitar la asistencia financiera del FMI. El acuerdo con el Fondo, aprobado en el mes de junio y modificado en octubre de 2018, prevé un rápido ajuste fiscal y monetario, que permita una reducción de los déficits gemelos —fiscal y exterior— y un descenso efectivo de la inflación, de forma que la economía entre en una senda de crecimiento estable. El éxito del programa, asumido con un claro compromiso por las autoridades argentinas, está sujeto, no obstante, a riesgos internos y externos, y supone un reto importante para el país.
