Inmigración: desarrollos recientes y consecuencias económicas

Abstract

Desde principios de los años noventa, la inmigración a España ha experimentado un crecimiento intenso y continuo. El porcentaje de población extranjera residente en España ha pasado del 1% aproximadamente en 1991 a alrededor del 8% en la actualidad. Si bien es cierto que este porcentaje es inferior al observado en otros países de nuestro entorno, su rápido crecimiento ha provocado numerosos debates sobre la incidencia y las consecuencias socioeconómicas de la inmigración y ha inspirado sucesivos cambios en las políticas inmigratorias. Entre dichos cambios, uno de los más trascendentes se está produciendo en estos momentos con la aprobación de un nuevo Reglamento de Extranjería. En este artículo se reseñan las principales medidas que introduce tal norma (entre ellas, el proceso de regularización especial de inmigrantes), se describen brevemente las características de la población extranjera (excluyendo a los ciudadanos de países de la UE) residente en España y se comentan algunas consecuencias socioeconómicas de la inmigración.
