From Kuya Guard to Ate Guard: Exploring the Lived Experiences of Lady Guards in Guiguinto, Bulacan

Abstract

Individuals working in the security field offer protection not only to people but also to properties. In today’s generation, where the world is gradually transforming into a profession with more equal opportunities, women are becoming active agents of peace and security. They are believed to have been a fantastic asset to the world of security due to their essential qualities of compassion, connection, and understanding. The study aims to evaluate the lived experiences, challenges, and coping mechanisms of the lady guards in Guiguinto, Bulacan. Narrative inquiry and phenomenological approach were utilized to discover and describe the lived experiences of ten (10) lady guards working in Guiguinto, Bulacan. Results showed that the majority of the lady guards are single mothers. Due to the long working hours, their personal life is sacrificed to make ends meet. In terms of their salary, they only receive a minimum of 12 hours every day. In addition, they have no idea of the benefits that go alongside their work, such as hazard pay. Moreover, lady guards still experience discrimination at work due to customers and other co-workers. In conclusion, while there might be equality in the workplace in the field of security, issues exist that can be fixed, and this study is one of the tools used to achieve change in the field of gender and equality.
