Abstract

The development of university campuses presents a valuable opportunity to create sustainable and inclusive spaces that support low-carbon initiatives and encourage active mobility. This study focuses on the thoughtful planning and intentional incorporation of pedestrian infrastructure, with UNIMAS West Campus serving as a case study. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining a survey of 107 respondents with site observations at UNIMAS West Campus. It examines students’ perceptions and the current design of pedestrian walkways, aiming to identify improvements for promoting sustainable mobility. Positioned within a horseshoe-shaped elevated area, the campus exemplifies a commitment to blending with the natural landscape while enhancing connectivity and accessibility. Despite the successful establishment of pedestrian walkways, recent studies reveal ongoing challenges, including vehicular emissions and the heavy reliance on motorized transportation by students and staff. The lack of covered walkways and insufficient lighting further diminishes the pedestrian experience, affecting comfort and safety, particularly during adverse weather and nighttime hours. To address these issues, the study proposes key improvements such as the installation of covered walkways, better lighting systems, wider pathways, and regular maintenance of pedestrian routes. Additionally, it emphasizes the need to address diverse user needs, including wheelchair accessibility and tactile guidance, to promote inclusivity. By implementing these recommendations, UNIMAS can foster sustainable mobility and move closer to its goal of becoming a low-carbon campus. This research highlights the need for holistic pedestrian infrastructure and showcases university campuses as models for sustainability and inclusive urban development.
