Bridging the Gap: Using English Test Results to Strengthen Licensure Examination for Teachers’ Readiness

Abstract

This quantitative study aimed to determine the level of English test results of Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English students enrolled at Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology–Dumangas Campus for the Academic Year 2023–2024. The study employed a descriptive research design. A 95-item standardized test based on the National Competency-Based Teacher Standards–Table of Specifications was administered to 80 English major students. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Kruskal-Wallis H-test through computer-aided statistical software. Findings revealed that the respondents obtained a poor level of English test results when taken as a whole and when grouped according to parents’ educational attainment and monthly family income. Furthermore, no significant differences were found in the English test results when respondents were classified according to parents’ educational attainment and socio-economic status, as indicated by p-values greater than the 0.05 level of significance.
