“A Community Psychology Approach to Understanding Unemployment in Zimbabwe.â€

Unemployment remains one of the most persistent socio-economic and psychosocial challenges affecting Zimbabwean society. Although unemployment is often discussed in economic terms, its broader effects on mental health, social functioning, and community well-being require critical scholarly attention. This article examines unemployment in Zimbabwe from a community psychology perspective using secondary data obtained from academic literature, institutional reports, journal articles, and government publications. The study explores the relationship between unemployment, psychological distress, family instability, social exclusion, and weakened community structures. Drawing upon principles of community psychology such as empowerment, social justice, resilience, prevention, and ecological perspectives, the article argues that unemployment should not be viewed solely as an individual failure but rather as a structural and systemic challenge influenced by economic instability, limited industrial growth, and social inequalities. The findings reveal that prolonged unemployment contributes significantly to depression, anxiety, hopelessness, low self-esteem, substance abuse, migration pressures, and weakened family relationships. However, Zimbabwean communities have also demonstrated resilience through informal economic activities, social support systems, entrepreneurship, and collective coping mechanisms. The article further highlights the importance of community-centered interventions, including mental health support, vocational empowerment programs, youth entrepreneurship initiatives, and policy reforms aimed at promoting social and economic inclusion. It concludes that sustainable solutions to unemployment in Zimbabwe require both economic transformation and psychosocial interventions that strengthen community resilience and collective empowerment.
