AI in the Writing Classroom: Impact on Idea Generation, Essay Refinement, and Ethical Writing Practices

Abstract

This action research examined the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in supporting student writing, focusing on idea generation, essay refinement, and ethical writing practices. The study aimed to determine students’ awareness of AI tools and ethical guidelines, analyze how AI supports the writing process, compare student writing before and after AI-assisted intervention, and explore students’ perceptions of AI use. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving pre- and post-surveys, AI text-similarity reports, student essays, and AI interaction logs. The intervention was implemented in selected senior English classes through a structured, teacher-guided AI-assisted writing process. Findings revealed that students initially had moderate awareness of AI but limited understanding of ethical use. After the intervention, students used AI primarily as a support tool for brainstorming and revision. Essays demonstrated improved coherence and clarity while maintaining students’ voice, supported by low AI text-similarity scores. Students also reported evaluating AI suggestions before use. The study concludes that guided AI integration can enhance writing skills while promoting ethical and responsible use.
