Abstract

This study delineates two advanced computational paradigms and an accompanying numerical algorithm designed to evaluate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of two-dimensional structural frames integrated with viscous fluid dampers (VFDs) under seismic excitation. The proposed methodology synergizes the Newmark average acceleration scheme with a modified Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative procedure to accurately capture structural buckling, material yield behaviors in beam-column elements, and the resultant damping forces exerted by the VFDs. To validate the framework, a benchmark 9-story planar steel structure subjected to the Kobe earthquake record is analyzed. The study provides a comparative assessment of response attenuation across three analytical scenarios: (1) linear elastic analysis, (2) geometric nonlinear analysis encompassing the P-Δ effect, and (3) a comprehensive second-order inelastic analysis considering simultaneous geometric and material nonlinearities. Concluding insights underscore the efficacy of VFDs in mitigating extreme seismic demands and offer imperative design recommendations for structural engineers implementing VFD systems for seismic resilience.
