Emerging Technologies in Education: Benefits, Challenges, and Effective Implementations

Teaching and learning continue to evolve as a result of the growing use of digital technologies across educational settings. Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), immersive learning environments, microlearning systems, and learning analytics are increasingly being used to support student learning, improve engagement, and enhance educational decision-making. Although these technologies have attracted considerable attention, evidence regarding their benefits, challenges, and implementation requirements remains fragmented across different educational contexts. This study uses Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to investigate the role of emerging technologies in education. Data was collected from major academic databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest. A total of 48 studies of 2,164 articles published between 2016 and 2025 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The analysis focused on four major technology areas: artificial intelligence, immersive technologies, microlearning and video-assisted learning, and learning analytics. The findings indicate that emerging technologies can support personalized learning, increase student engagement, improve access to educational resources, and strengthen data-informed teaching practices. Immersive technologies provide opportunities for experiential learning, while AI systems support adaptive feedback and individualized instruction. Microlearning enhances flexibility and accessibility, whereas learning analytics assists educators in monitoring student progress and identifying learning needs. Despite these benefits, several barriers remain, including high implementation costs, unequal access to technology, limited infrastructure, teacher preparedness, and concerns related to privacy and ethics. The review concludes that the effectiveness of emerging technologies depends largely on pedagogical alignment, institutional readiness, teacher competence, and equitable access. The findings provide useful insights for educators, policymakers, and institutions seeking to integrate emerging technologies in a sustainable and responsible manner.
